Government backs Welsh Lib Dem proposals for National Dementia plan - Randerson comment

3.02.37pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 10th Jul 2008

Commenting on the Government's backing of a Welsh Liberal Democrat amendment calling for a National Dementia Plan for Wales, party Spokesperson for Health Jenny Randerson AM said:

"I am delighted that the Government have accepted our amendment and will now be bringing forward a national dementia plan for Wales. As I said in the Chamber, we are looking at a massive increase in the numbers of people suffering from dementia in the next few years and it would have been disastrous if the Government had rejected our calls.

"Dementia is one of the biggest issue facing the NHS because of the huge increases we are facing. As the Minister admitted, there is a clear need for an effective partnership between various bodies, all working from a strategic framework. I am delighted that the Government made the right choice to support our amendments."
