Randerson welcomes movement on presumed consent9.57.25am GMT Tue 15th Jan 2008
Welsh Liberal Democrat health spokesperson, Jenny Randerson has welcomed the move towards a system of presumed organ consent. Jenny Randerson recently attempted to introduce a Legislative Competency Order in the National Assembly seeking to devolve powers from Westminster which would allow the Assembly to introduce a presumed consent system in Wales. Jenny Randerson said: "I welcome the move towards Presumed Consent and the Prime Minister's commitment to it." "Any future system must contain plenty of safeguards to ensure the wishes of anyone who does not want their organs being used are respected. I am confident that any future system can do just that." "I am also keen that consultation and education of the public must be robust enough to ensure that public opinion on this issue is respected. "Thousands of people suffer needlessly and die because of a lack of organs and a system of presumed consent will clearly save many lives." Notes: 1. Jenny Randerson's LCO has not yet been drawn in the ballot but could be in the future. 2. The Prime Minister yesterday announced that he was in favour of a presumed consent system. Ends/diwedd
