Jenny Randerson - Standing up for Cardiff Central

'Healthy Hearts' Earns Reprieve

4.36.50pm GMT Fri 23rd Mar 2007

Today Jenny Randerson, AM for Cardiff Central visited the Healthy Hearts Club at Llanishen Leisure Centre where she gave a speech on Welsh Lib Dem health policy and answered questions. The club, like many others is under threat because the lottery funding is coming to an end.

"The club meets every week and provides several options for exercise such as aerobics and swimming under medically trained supervision. Cardiac nurses also visit to provide support and guidance. The members regard this as an invaluable service that helps them to recover and stay fit.

"They informed that they had received a letter from the LHB stating that they would now be funded until the autumn. This is a welcome reprieve but the end of the lottery funding has been on the table for some time.

"I will continue to do my bit to keep the Centre open. Brian Gibbons said that lottery funded projects cannot expect indefinite funding yet this project predates the lottery.

"Lottery funding appears to have replaced government funding yet again."
