Extra Social Services Money Needed for Local Government

5.01.44pm GMT Wed 7th Feb 2007

Today in Plenary Welsh Lib Dem Social Services and Finance Spokesperson Jenny Randerson AM pressed The Finance Minister to provide more money for Social Services as the Social Services Inspectorate Report makes clear that spending is falling as a proportion of Local Government spending.

"I am deeply aware of the increasing expectations placed on social services and the lack of corresponding increase in income. I pointed out that some Local Authorities are reporting a 100% increase in the number of Adult Social Services assessments done this year. I am surprised that the Minister was surprised at this.

"The Labour Assembly Government does not seem to be fully aware of the enormous challenges facing Councils of all colours in respect of social services.

"The Minister said she is reviewing the formula for funding Social Services so I hope that this will lead to a fair funding process for local government."
