Concern at Knock on Effect of Recalling Patients

4.37.26pm GMT Thu 1st Feb 2007

Following Brian Gibbons' statement on the Second Offer Scheme at Weston NHS Trust, Cardiff Central AM Jenny Randerson expressed concern at the impact that recalling 700 patients will have on the stretched finances of Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust.

Jenny said "at a minimum of £100 per patient for the recall it is important that local services are not affected by this extra expenditure. There will also be an impact on waiting lists so special consideration is needed. WE cannot allow a return to the massive orthopaedic waiting lists we had a couple of years ago."

"I have a great degree of sympathy for the 20 or so people that will have to have a second operation through the incompetence of others and it must be ensured that similar problems are avoided within the second offer scheme."

"The safety mechanisms for these operations do not seem to have kicked in early enough."
