Jenny Randerson - Standing up for Cardiff Central

Smoking Ban Comment

2.25.29pm GMT Tue 30th Jan 2007

Before today's debate on the ban on smoking in all public places coming into force in Wales on April 2nd, Jenny Randerson AM issued a warning about the need to bring in the changes as soon as possible.

Mrs Randerson, Welsh Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson said: "The smoking ban will only save lives, and the sooner it is brought into force, the better. The National Assembly for Wales has the duty to decide what is best for Wales, not what is in line with England. The smoking ban is the kind of radical action that this Assembly should be taking.

"Second-hand smoke is thought to cause over 400 deaths among non-smokers every year from lung cancer, respiratory illnesses and heart disease. A ban is good news for smokers and non-smokers across Wales and should be brought in as soon as possible."

Back in September, I warned that Welsh businesses had a very tight timetable to bring in the changes and that the Government had to inform them as soon as possible.

"However I think it would be a mistake to move the ban back to July, in line with England, because of these fears. The Government must step up its information programme to ensure businesses know what they have to do."
