Swansea and Cardiff Join Forces to Win Burns Centre for Wales3.02.01pm GMT Wed 29th Nov 2006 Cardiff University and Morriston Hospital, Swansea have been awarded the Healing Foundation UK Centre for Burns Research. This means £10 million over 20 years between Swansea and Cardiff Universities, Swansea NHS Trust and the Healing Foundation (a UK charity researching disfiguring conditions). The centre will provide an international focus for burns research, education, prevention and psychological understanding. Commenting on the successful bid Jenny Randerson, health spokesperson for the Welsh Liberal Democrats said "The Cardiff and Swansea team have achieved a major coup beating bids from across the UK. Hopefully this is just the beginning of Wales becoming a world leader in a range of health sectors. "The spin off benefits for burns victims in Wales should be massive. I am not surprised that Wales won the bid with the enormous range of expertise that Cardiff University and the widely acclaimed specialist burns unit in Swansea have to offer."
