Better Mental Healthcare for young people - Jenny Randerson2.26.26pm GMT Tue 21st Nov 2006 Mental healthcare services in Wales must be tailored to respond better to young people in need of support, Jenny Randerson will say in the National Assembly today. The Welsh Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson is speaking in a debate on Mental Healthcare, and is concerned that there are not enough services for young people in Wales. "Some young people have to travel to England for the treatment they need - the Children's Commissioner called this a disgrace back in February. And yet here we are once again asking the government to address the problem, nine months later. "We know there are real gaps in services that should be available to young people in need of help. There are not enough beds for young people who need treatment for eating disorders in Wales. Child and Adolescent services operate for children up to 16, and Adult services begin at 18. "Put simply, we are not doing enough for young people in the 16-18 age group. "I want the Government to act on these concerns. I am less than impressed with the Government's attitude to improving Mental Health provision. "For too long now it has been the Cinderella service, forgotten when funding and developmental change is needed. I want to see more support for a vital service for vulnerable young people."
